Having started the commission with an awareness of certain preferences, I developed ideas that increased the light levels in the courtyard, and introduced imagery though the process of fired pigments on glass.
The courtyard for the Care Centre has a series of vertical steel sections to support the above structure. Using these steels as a 'frame', I designed and engineered a scheme that would incorporate printed glass panels between these existing vertical steels.
To allow for effective lighting of these glass panels and at the same time increase the light in the courtyard, I designed a lighting plan that involved connecting a series of horizontally mounted external fluorescent units to the rear of the glass panels. These units would project light on to the rear wall and back onto the glass panels. For effective even 'bouncing' of light, a series of white panels were fixed to the rear wall
The printed glass panels are 10mm thick toughed safety glass BS 6206 - CLASS A
The chosen theme for the project involved 'the movement of water'.
Starting from the left. The first set off panels describes a running river. The second / middle set describe clouds and on the right they describe a pond.
In each set of panels I have incorporated literal images that offer a more literal meaning to the more ambiguous surrounding imagery.
On the fist set there is a rock, which helps to describe the environment the river is flowing through. In the second set there is a plane emerging from the clouds and in the third set there is pond plant life and bird life.
